Core ZHESS Rules
ZHESS uses familiar royal-board fundamentals, then adds Archer pressure in Artillery.
Goal: checkmate the king.
King: one square; never move into check.
Queen: any straight or diagonal line.
Rook: straight lines. Bishop: diagonal lines. Knight: L-shape jumps.
Pawn: forward movement, diagonal captures, first-move double step.
Captures happen by occupying an enemy square.
Promotion and en passant follow ZHESS timing rules.
Draws can happen by stalemate or no legal winning path.
Castling
A special King and Rook maneuver that immediately ends the turn.
Requirements
The King and chosen Rook must be unmoved, the King must not be under attack, and the King may not pass through or finish on an attacked square.
Left-Side Castling
The King moves to the left Rook's original square. The left Rook moves to the Queen's original square.
Right-Side Castling
The King moves to the right Rook's original square. The right Rook moves to the King's original square.
